SCC TNR TIPS

This page will contain our tips for those helping community cats with desexing. The practice most often used is termed Trap Neuter Return.

We recognise that the most sociable of the community cats may be rehomed usually through a rescuer or group to find a new life with a kind-hearted family. However, sometimes this includes a period of time.

Plan before Trapping

It is most important to be prepared & have your help and facilities lined up before actually trapping or extracting a cat from your colony.

Only immediately remove cats from their areas when the situation is life threatening for a cat / cats. You will have responsibility for caring for the cat until alternatives can be arranged.

Resources to help being organised

Alley Cat Allies is a great place to start for advice and information. There is a wealth of information for hands on individual rescuers and carers. This is just one page, many more there!

An excellent Aussie source is the Australian Pet Welfare Foundation. They provide their own advice and information / guides and a page of links to other expert sources.

“Community Cat Programs (CCPs) are proven to humanely and sustainably reduce the population of stray cats in urban areas. By collaborating with communities to manage their cat populations and protect native wildlife, without resorting to euthanasia, these innovative programs tackle the causes and consequences of overpopulation, while protecting cherished human-animal bonds.”
