LOCATION & TIME

#1. The rally will commence in Martin Place, near Phillip Street crossing.

At the stepped area we welcome individuals and groups in “smart casual” cat attire to attempt for the world record of largest crowd in cat costumers. Note, simple attire will suffice! (clothing to be cat coloured, ears, whiskers & a tail) and we shall take photos in groups of cat attired attendees.

#2. Above the steps and between Macquarie St, there will be opportunities for attendees to record their own messages for our government Ministers & representatives.

#3. And then a short march to the front of Parliament House! All peaceful & showing our care for cats and their owners & caregivers.

Key Messages

βœ… The Inquiry Management of Cat Populations NSW 2025 findings are fully supported

“Yes” to supporting desexing programs

“It is clear that desexing is a critical part of any cat management strategy. The breeding cycle must be broken to reduce the overpopulation of cats.”

“Yes” to voluntary cat containment & behaviour-change programs

“A major issue that emerged throughout the inquiry was cat containment or cat curfews, and whether or not this should be mandatory. Overall, many believed that there are benefits to voluntary cat containment, but that the potential negative consequences of mandatory or punitive cat containment laws make them unworkable in New South Wales at present. It was apparent to the committee that there is currently insufficient evidence that mandatory cat containment and cat curfew laws are effective, and in fact they could have adverse consequences including the costs imposed on councils and significant increases in euthanasia rates. The committee encourages the Government to fund educational and behaviour-change programs so as to foster the voluntary adoption of cat containment within the community.” https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/lcdocs/inquiries/3011/Animal%20Welfare%20Committee%20-%20Report%20no.%202%20-%20Management%20of%20cat%20populations%20in%20New%20South%20Wales.pdf

Australian Pet Welfare Foundation:

“πŸŽ‰ Great news for cats, wildlife and the community! πŸŽ‰
The NSW Government has released its response to the parliamentary inquiry into cat management and it’s a HUGE step in the right direction. Here’s what they’re planning:
🌟 Recognition that desexing works
🌟 Major funding for desexing (including community cats!)
🌟 No mandatory containment
🌟 Support for rescues, councils and community programs
🌟 Focus on education, not punishment
🌟 Acknowledgement that wildlife decline is also caused by habitat loss and other pests, not just cats
This is a positive, balanced direction and shows what’s possible when we keep pushing for humane, evidence-based approaches.”
